Department : MathREGULAR PRECALCULUS
Grade Level: 10-12 Type of Course : Regular
Description: The first quarter of Precalculus is a study of trigonometric functions, trigonometric equations and their applications. The second quarter is triangle trigonometry and trigonometric addition formulas . The third quarter is devoted to linear, quadratic, and polynomial functions and inequalities. During the fourth quarter, work is done on functions, exponents, and logarithms.Class Goals: The students will have the groundwork for further study of mathematics at the college level. The students will learn to integrate use of the calculator with math assignments for some participation in a technological society. The students will develop reasoning skills such as analyzing information and making conjectures. The students will develop skills necessary to solve application problems. The students will build their thinking and problem solving skills while developing a better understanding of past Algebraic concepts. The students will become more confident of their mathematical abilities and will begin to enjoy use of their Algebraic and geometric skills. The students will work on following directions and being precise. The students will be challenged and asked to think beyond basic concepts. Necessary Resources: The textbook, Advanced Mathematics, is the book that is presently used. This book, paper, graph paper, and pencil (no ink) should be brought to class daily. Each student will be required to have a TI-83,TI-84, TI-84 Plus or TI-83 Plus calculator. Rulers and compasses are provided in the classroom, when needed.
Grading Formula:Homework and quiz grades are combined to obtain the daily average. The daily average is 50% of each quarter’s grade. The other 50% is test grades. Homework is graded almost daily and tests are given approximately every two weeks. Grades are posted on edline every two weeks. The average of both quarter grades is 75% of the semester grade. The semester exam is the remaining 25%. (Triple the average of the two quarter grades and add the semester exam grade, and divide this sum by 4 to obtain the semester average).
Academic Expectations:Homework is given nightly, except test nights. Homework is graded on a daily basis. Quizzes can be expected any time material has been sufficiently covered. Tests are usually given at the conclusion of a chapter. Time allowed for homework should be between 30 minutes to 60 minutes a night.
Behavioral Expectations:Students will do work as assigned with no late work being accepted except in the case of an illness. Students are expected to have all materials with them and will not be allowed to go back to their cars or to the lockers to get materials. Students will not talk while the lesson is being presented. If school rules are followed, the student will enjoy a positive learning environment. No cell phones allowed. Extra Help/Assistance:Extra help is provided 30 minutes before school begins and during help session each day. These sessions are used to clarify any questions the student might have concerning material covered or missed because of absences. If a test is missed because of a single day’s absence, the test will be taken the following day. The teacher should be consulted if two or more days’ absence resulted in a missed test. Closing Comments:Precalculus is learned through practice, not by observing only. Students will be asked to work problems from the board during class and they will be given extra practice in the homework. Note: When absent, please go to my website as given above to get your assignment. The assignments will be updated daily.
