Description:  The first quarter of Algebra I is an introduction to Algebra I, a study of real numbers and a study of solving equations.  The second quarter is a study of polynomials and factoring.  The third quarter is a study of fractions and functions. The fourth quarter is a study of systems of equations, radicals, and inequalities.

Class Goals:

The students will have a working knowledge of Algebra I that will enable them to move easily into the next subject area:  Geometry.

The students will develop reasoning skills such as analyzing information, making conjectures and develop the skills to solve application problems.

Students will build their thinking and problem solving skills as well as their understanding of Algebra.

My hope is that students will become more confident of their mathematical abilities and will begin to enjoy using algebra skills.

Necessary Resources:

Students will need a copy of the textbook:  Algebra (Structure and Method) Book I.  They also will need loose-leaf paper, graph paper, pencils and a blue or black pen. Each student will be allowed, on some occasions, to use a small calculator (not a graphing calculator).

Grading Formula:

Quarter Average=(Test Average +Homework Average) /2, Semester Average= ( 3*(average of two quarter grades) + exam) /4.

Semester exams count 25% of the final semester average.  Quiz grades are averaged in like homework grades.

Grades will be posted to Edline at least every two weeks and also after each major test.

Academic Expectations:

Two tests are given for each chapter, usually about every two or three weeks.  Quizzes are given twice a week and homework grades are given every day.

Homework will be given every day except after a major test.  30-60 minutes a day should be spent on homework.  However, some time will be given in class.

Behavioral Expectations:

Students will do work as assigned with no late work being accepted except in the case of an illness.  Students are expected to have all materials with them and will not be allowed to go back to their car or to the locker to get materials. Students will not talk while the lesson is being presented.

Extra Help/Assistance:

I am available before school daily for extra help.( 7:20 –7:45) .  Break time and my planning times are also good times to seek my assistance.

Closing Comments:

This class will not be only a lecture class.  I like for you to have some time in class to start the work and get my assistance before you go home to work on it.  You learn algebra by doing it, not by observing others.  I am here to help you and I hope you will feel free to seek assistance from me in this endeavor.

Note:  When you are absent, please go to my website as stated above to get the day's assignment.  The assignments will be updated daily
