Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the concepts of Algebra. The course will provide students with a solid foundation for Algebra with an emphasis on the fundamental concepts of algebra and some geometry. It will involve learning skills and concepts such as variables and their usage, equation solving, and problem solving. The course uses a “student-friendly” approach to help students develop or enhance problem-solving skills, thinking strategies and critical thinking skills. Completion of the course lays the groundwork for a successful study of algebra and later fields of mathematics.
Class Goals: Goals for this course include the development of deductive reasoning and critical thinking skills, the development of good organizational skills, and improved skills in following directions and a strong foundation for future math classes. At the end of the course a student should a grasp on using transformations to solve equations and inequalities, simplifying operations involving integers, the relationship between ratios, proportions, percents, fractions, and decimals, graphing linear equations using a table of values, and the importance of the distributive property for Algebra.
Necessary Resources:
The text is Pre-Algebra, McDougal Littell. This book, paper, notebook, pencils, and pen should be brought to class daily.
Grades are determined as follows:
Daily average x 10%
+ Homework average x 20%
+ Quiz average x 20%
+ Test average x 50%
-----------------------------------------------
QUARTER TOTAL
Grades are posted on NetClassroom weekly. I try to return the tests the following school day if possible.
Academic Expectations: The text book should be read. There will be daily assignments of homework, for homework is the most effective way for students to prepare and practice acquired skills. Homework is an effort grade. Homework must be done in pencil. Every problem should be attempted with work shown for all. Quizzes are used to measure students’ acquisition of learned skills. There will be approximately 8 or 9 quizzes per term. Students should expect 3 to 4 sections covered on each quiz. Tests are the greatest determinant of student learning, understanding, and application of covered concepts and skills. There will be approximately 3 tests per quarter.
Behavioral Expectations: Students are expected to behave appropriately including respect for the teacher and peers, promptness, good manners. A great deal of my efforts will be focused on student responsibility. Students will be encouraged to actively engage in activities and discussions. The only stupid question is the one that isn’t asked. Participation in class allows students to help booster their grade at the end of each grading term. Students will not be penalized for not participating.
Closing Comments:
A review day is generally scheduled before each test. Test problems are similar to homework and quiz problems and these should be studied carefully.
I have read and understand this syllabus.
