Description: Algebra Basics is intended to prepare students for Algebra I and some Geometry. The course begins by solidifying Pre-Algebra concepts in the first semester and concludes in the second semester with fundamental concepts of Algebra: factoring, transformations, polynomial operations, and problem solving. Students complete various types of higher-level learning problems and are given opportunities to enhance their critical thinking skills via investigation and experimentation to find their own methods of solutions for particular problems, using the skills presented to them in class. The course uses a “student-friendly” approach to help students develop or enhance problem-solving skills, thinking strategies and critical thinking skills.
Class Goals:
Upon leaving Algebra Basics students will have the necessary mathematical skills and confidence to continue with Algebra I, and eventually, other mathematical disciplines.
Students will continue the development of deductive reasoning and critical thinking skills, the development of good organizational skills, and improved skills in following directions and a strong foundation for future math classes.
Students should not only learn the techniques used in algebraic computation, but also learn to express mathematical ideas and historical developments in both written and oral form.
It is hoped that students will learn an appreciation for the utility of mathematics especially in the context of today’s technological society that extend beyond the classroom walls and the school environment.
Necessary Resources:
These texts will be used Math: Course 2, McDougal Littell in the Semester 1 and Algebra: Structure and Method-Book 1, McDougal Littell/Houghton Mifflin in Semester 2. Students will need loose-leaf paper, a binder to organize assignments, a basic four-function calculator and class notes.
Grades are determined as follows:
Daily average x 10%
+ Homework average x 20%
+ Quiz average x 20%
+ Test average x 50%
-----------------------------------------------
QUARTER TOTAL
*Policy allows for exemption from the Semester 2 exam for an average 87% or higher
Extra help is provided before school. I will be available for help Monday through Friday 7:15 - 8:00 in the mornings. Students are encouraged to seek help. Students may also call me at home for assistance. If a student is absent, he/she should plan to seek help on the day the student returns to school. If a test is missed because of a single day’s absence, the test will be taken the following day.
A review day is generally scheduled before each test. Test problems are similar to homework and quiz problems and these should be studied carefully. Reading each section as covered is always assigned-though not written! Homework will be checked in class. It is your responsibility to find out and do the assignments when absent.
I have read and understand this syllabus.
