Description:  Algebra I is intended to prepare the student for high school Geometry and Algebra II.  Topics taught include real numbers; variables; equations; inequalities; polynomial functions; graphs; polynomials; factoring; rational expressions; quadratic equations; radicals; and problem solving.

Class Goals:

Upon leaving Algebra I students are to have the necessary mathematical skills to smoothly enter Geometry and eventually Algebra II.

Students complete various types of higher-level learning problems and are given opportunities to enhance their critical thinking skills via investigation and experimentation to find their own methods of solutions for particular problems, using the skills presented to them in class.

Students should not only learn the techniques used in algebraic computation, but also learn to express mathematical ideas and historical developments in both written and oral form.

It is hoped that students will learn an appreciation for the utility of mathematics especially in the context of today’s technological society. Additionally, students are taught strategies for organizing their work that they can carry over into their other subjects and utilize outside the school environment.

Necessary Resources:

Students will need loose-leaf paper, a binder to organize assignments and class notes, textbook Algebra (Structure & Method) Book I, Agenda, Pens/Pencils. When necessary, graph paper and basic four-function calculators will be supplied by the teacher.

Grading Formula:

Each quarter grade consists of: 10% Daily, 20% Homework, 20% Quizzes, 50% Tests.

Quarter grade =        (test average x .50)

+ (quiz average x .20)

+ (homework average x .20)

+ (daily average x .10)

The average of the two quarter grades will count 85% and the semester exam will count 15% of the final semester average. Note: Middle School policy allows for exemption from the 2nd semester exam for an average of 87% or above for the year.

I do not give extra credit assignments.

Academic Expectations:

Tests will be given every 3-5 sections of work or over the chapter. Quizzes will be given twice weekly unless a test is scheduled for that week. There will be two homework tests each quarter and one project each semester.

Students are assigned homework problems from the A and B sections in the textbook. These are the easier and moderately difficult problems.

Students are required to complete a math history research paper with a Microsoft PowerPoint oral presentation. Students also prepare a math terms Etymology Report containing 10 terms.

Behavioral Expectations:

MACROBUTTON Students are to show respect to the teacher and their peers at all times. No credit will be given for homework that is late not due to absence.

Extra Help/Assistance:

I am available for help daily from 7:15am to 8:00am.

Additionally, students may call me at home anytime.

Closing Comments:

My chapter tests are designed from the homework problems, and my semester exams are designed from the chapter tests. Being organized and retaining all homework assignments and chapter tests will aid students in preparing for homework tests and exams.

Reading each section as covered is always assigned-though not written!

Homework will be graded in class. Name of grader will be on all homework.

Assignments not graded because of an absence will be a zero until submitted.

Two days will be allowed to make up an assignment if you missed the lecture because of an absence. However, the assignment due on the day you are absent is due immediately upon return. All assignments will be pledged. It is your responsibility to find out and do the assignments when absent.

All homework is due at the start of class the following day unless otherwise noted. No credit will be given for late homework!
