Medieval Day

This event is a culminating activity involving all academic and enrichment areas after an interdisciplinary unit between social studies and literature.

 In literature the objectives for the medieval unit are:

  1. Read and interpret an historical fiction novel,  Adam of The Road.
  2. Watch films to understand about castles and their functions.
  3. Understand and use vocabulary from the Middle Ages
  4. Express understanding through creative and critical writing by writing a poem and journal entry about Medieval subjects and people.
  5. Participate in research on family crests, coats-of-arms, medieval names and sources of names today, and to produce a coat of arms using information gained.

 In social studies the objectives are:

  1. Study and understand the history of the period.

    2.   Watch films to understand cathedrals and architecture.

  1.  Take a field trip to St. Paul’s church to view the Tiffany stained glass windows.
  2. Incorporate additional vocabulary.
  3. Express in writing
  4. Create a class mural of stained glass.

The objectives for Medieval Day activities are for students to gain extra information in aspects of medieval life not covered in previous activities.

Literature:

  1. Herbal uses, medical and hygienic
  2. Love potions and myths

Grammar: 

  1. Calligraphy

Math: 

  1. Strategy games of checkers back gammon, chess

Science:

  1. Tools and technology

Social Studies:

  1. Stained glass activity

French:

  1. Create gargoyles out of clay

Music:

  1. Listen to and discuss period chants
  2. Discuss musical instruments of the period

Band:

  1. Discuss musical instruments of the period (herald demonstration)

Art:

1.  Illumination

P.E.:

  1. Relay Races
  2. Walking on stilts
  3. Foot Races
