April 2, 2007
Dear Parents and Students,
The Middle School philosophy is to encourage participation in extracurricular activities whether it is sports, cheerleading, intramurals, or school plays. In order to bring about more participation in the cheerleading program, two cheerleading squads will be chosen. The two cheerleading squads will be organized with twelve students on each squad. One squad will cheer during the football season, and the other will cheer during the basketball season. Students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade during the 2007-2008 school year are eligible to tryout for the squads.
Prior to the tryout, the eighth grade cheerleaders will conduct clinics for the prospective cheerleaders. They will hold this clinic (at no charge) in the middle school gym on Monday, April 30th and Tuesday, May 1st from 3:00 – 4:00. During the clinic, the prospective cheerleaders will learn the required basic cheer, chants, and jumps that will be performed in the tryouts. If for some reason a student cannot attend the clinic, she will need to make arrangements to learn the tryout material with a willing eighth grade cheerleader.
Football and basketball tryouts will be held from 4:00-5:00 pm in the BGA Middle School Gym on Thursday, May 3rd. Girls are encouraged to arrive by 3:30 to prepare for tryouts. The results of the tryouts will be relayed by a phone message left on Mrs. Kinnard’s BGA telephone (this information will be given out at tryouts).
On Monday and Tuesday, May 14th and May 15th, the football and basketball cheerleaders will meet respectively with Mrs. Kinnard and Mrs. Harlan to pick out uniforms from the gym. This will allow for fill in uniform measurement with Varsity on Tuesday, May 22, in the Commons Room immediately after school dismisses at 12:00 noon. This meeting on Tuesday will be with both the cheerleaders and their parents. At this time parents need to pay for the summer camp by checks made out to BGA. The cost of the camp this year is $145.00. Cheerleaders will be measured for bloomers and shoes, which will be paid for as these items arrive in July. Also, a personalized duffel bag will be ordered for new cheerleaders and paid for when it arrives. Parents can ask questions and will be informed as to the expectations and requirements of being on the squads.
Football and basketball cheerleaders are required to attend the one week of camp during the summer. It will be held at the middle school gym during the week of July 30-August 2. Monday and Tuesday will be from 9:00-11:30 am, and Wednesday and Thursday will be from 9:00-4:00. Lunch will be provided these last two days. These four days are mandatory so please mark this camp week on your calendar.
All girls planning to try out for cheerleading are required to complete a tryout packet. Veteran students will receive their packets at school, and new students enrolled by April 20th will receive theirs by mail. Please read the directions on the front of the packet and return the parental permission/preference form to the middle school office by Wednesday, April 25th.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kinnard
Mrs. Harlan
