Kenshin Himura is a wandering swordsman, a twenty-eight-year-old rurouni who travels Japan. He is the former Hitokiri Battousai, a manslayer/assassin during the Japanese Revolution (Bakumatsu). However, he is ashamed of the lives he took, even in the name of the government, and has been wandering for the past ten years, seeking atonement. He uses the Hiten Misurugi Style, and a reverse-blade sword, a sakabatou.


Kaoru Kamiya is assisstant master at the Kamiya dojo, and teaches the Kamiya Kasshin Style. This style was founded by her father, who is dead. Kaoru may look gentle, but she is a wonderful fighter, and an excellent eighteen-year-old girl, though she has a bit of a temper.






Sanosuke Sagara is a street fighter of infamous reputation. After being set up to fight Kenshin at nineteen, he ends up making friends with him and joins him on many of his adventures. Although his weapon of choice, the zanbatou, was broken during his fight with Kenshin, Sano still can use his fists, and actually uses them quite well. A very useful guy to have around, though you wouldn't offer him food. Sano is quite the freeloader and never pays his bills at the Akabeko, a local restruant, or with Kaoru, whom he often mooches off of.


Yahiko Myojin is a eleven-year-old kid, though you don't want to say that to his face. Son of a samurai, he is a very proud boy, and hates being thought of as weak or little. He is learning the Kamiya Kasshin Style under Kaoru, nicknamed ugly, after being rescued from yakuza, the Japanese equivalent of thugs.




Megumi Takani is a doctor from a whole family of doctors. However, during the revolution, her family was killed or missing. She was apprenticed to a doctor that created opium, an drug, for Takeda, a black market mastermind. The doctor created another brand of opium that used half the ingredients and was twice as potent. Takeda wanted to mass produce, and when the doctor refused, murdered him. Megumi was the only one who knew how to create the opium, and was captured by Takeda until Kenshin and company rescued her. She is now living with Doctor Genzai, and helps take care of the crew when they are injured or ill.
