The University of Tennessee
The University of Tennessee began as Blount College on 10 September 1794. In 1807, the institution received a new designation-East Tennessee College-and in 1840 was elevated to East Tennessee University. Following the Civil War, the State of Tennessee made the University provide military training, and the teachings of agriculture and mechanical subjects to its students. Then the University took on the name of The University of Tennessee in 1879.
