5th Grade Math in a

The topics we will cover are: place value with whole numbers & decimals, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division with whole numbers and decimals, fraction concepts, addition, subtraction, & multiplication with fractions, comparing fractions and decimals, measurement: metrics and standard, and basic geometry.

Several games we will play this year include: The Great Velcro Shootout!, Five for Five, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Sideline Math, Decimal & Fraction Bingo, Decimal &Fraction Memory, Fraction Poker.

In addition we will participate in lots of fun math activities including: Problem of Days, Speed Drills, Pi Day, Geoboards, Fraction Burgers, Clothespins Place-Value, AOL Step by Step Math, The Great Math Race,

Your math average is divided into three categories: tests, quizzes, and homework. Tests equal 40% of your overall average. Quizzes equal 35% of your overall average and homework makes up the remainder 25%.

Please visit Net Classroom to find out your current average in math. I usually update grades weekly. If you see an "M" next to an assignment then I am missing "M" that assignment and it is counting as a zero until you have turned it into me. Below is a link to Net Classroom. You will need your username and password. Contact the middle school office if you do not know your username and / or password yet.

Strategies for Success

Come in early for morning help session, especially on test or quiz days. I am available every morning for help from 7:30-8:00 a.m. but please see me "early". It does not help you any if you show up at 7:55 a.m.
Correct mistakes on homework assignments for partial credit. Always complete on a separate sheet of paper and staple to your original grade (assignment). If the missed problems are correct, you will receive half the points back per problem missed. Example Sally scored a 70 on her last homework assignment because there were 10 problems and she missed three. Sally corrected the three missed problems and turned in later that week to Mr. C. Two of the three problems missed were correct; therefore Sally new homework grade is an 80.
You are allowed to retake any quiz if your grade is lower than an 80%. If you choose to retake, your best grade can only be an 80%.
